Starting your own business can feel like a massive leap into the unknown. Many people dream of the day they will launch their own company, but often wonder: when is the right time? This question looms, especially for those balancing careers, families, or education.

A Strategic and Personal Decision

The timing for starting a business is profoundly personal and strategic. It’s not just about market conditions or having a great idea. It’s about your readiness, your support system, and having honest conversations about the realities involved. Having a solid support network, particularly with those closest to you—such as family—is crucial. It means, for example, planning with your partner to ensure that pursuing your passion won’t derail your family goals.

My journey to founding Eggcelerate wasn’t a sudden jump. It took years of exploration. During my MBA, I began taking on projects with startups and smaller businesses, keeping a foot in the corporate and entrepreneurial worlds until the time felt right to commit fully. This experience taught me that entrepreneurship doesn’t have to be rushed. It’s about taking thoughtful steps and building a foundation before leaping.

The Pressure of Expectations

A critical insight I’ve gained is the pressure that often comes with an MBA or any formal business education. Many students feel the expectation to quickly jump into entrepreneurship or join a prestigious consulting firm immediately after graduation. However, I advise against rushing into starting a business out of a sense of obligation or external pressure. Instead, consider your landscape—your family, financial stability, and passion for a particular problem.

“Take your time,” I always emphasise, noting that being on the path to personal change doesn’t mean making impulsive decisions. Starting a business, especially with a young family or financial obligations, requires careful planning, including honest discussions about cash flow and stability.

Passion and Purpose are Key

Reflecting on successful entrepreneurs I’ve encountered, I’ve noticed a common trait: they are all driven by passion and purpose. Starting a business isn’t just a logical decision; it must also come from the heart. I remember speaking with a FinTech startup founder who initially explained his idea in purely business terms. When pressed, he eventually opened up about his true motivation: supporting small suppliers and ensuring that cash flow didn’t become a barrier for small businesses.

This deeper purpose and connection to the problem to solve sustain entrepreneurs through challenging times. A startup is rarely smooth sailing, and a sense of purpose can be the compass that keeps you on track.

Balance Between Strategy and Execution

The crux of my philosophy at Eggcelerate is the balance between strategy and execution. Too often, small businesses receive high-level strategy advice from consultants who disappear, leaving founders to manage the complex execution task alone. I advise aspiring entrepreneurs to ensure they’re thinkers and doers willing to roll up their sleeves and make practical changes. Effective entrepreneurship requires both vision and the discipline to implement that vision day by day. Finding ways to bridge strategy with action effectively is one key to building sustainable success as an entrepreneur.

Making the Leap When You’re Ready

Ultimately, deciding to start your own business is personal, and there is no one-size-fits-all answer for when the time is right. It involves waiting until the time is right professionally and personally—a balance of opportunity and readiness. I advise aspiring entrepreneurs to think carefully, prepare thoroughly, and pursue a business that aligns with their purpose.

If you’re currently debating whether to start your business, ask yourself: Is there a genuine market need that aligns with your skills and passion? Do you have a support system to help you through the ups and downs? Are you prepared, not just financially but also mentally, for the uncertainties of starting a business?

There’s no perfect time to leap, but with thoughtful preparation, a deep connection to your purpose, and a willingness to learn, you can turn your entrepreneurial dream into reality—when it’s the right time for you.
